Atticus is away, therefore Cal takes the J and S to her church, where the black section of Maycomb go. Harper Lee tells us that it has no ceiling, was not painted and that it had ‘lamps that were unlit and hung on brass brackets’. Harper Lee is trying to tell us that first person church, it was called because it was paid by the first earnings of the first freed black people, was poor and wasn’t as well decorated as Scout’s normal church. On the other hand the cemetery was described as well decorated and was looking normal for Scout, ‘It was a happy cemetery.’ Harper Lee used personification to suggest that the cemetery had everything it needed to be ‘happy’.
At the end of the church service the reverend was forcing charitable donations. If you didn’t donate your name would be called and you would be made to fell shame. If you didn’t come to church they would say that you aren’t welcome in the house of God, therefore you were going to hell.

This starts well – but I can’t help but think you are capable of a much more detailed exploration of the church that this.
Some points for development
1) Does First Purchase (capital F, capital P) need to be compared to Scout’s church – if so – give us a solid quotation to compare it.
2) Include more details from the graveyard
3) I know your vocabulary is normally much more sophisticated than this.
